As the days go by, the invention, innovation, and application of technology increase. In the past decade, the world witnessed several staggering technological inventions/innovations. These are the facts about technology advancement.

From the purchase of food through apps to the streaming of music on Spotify. There is also a case of various companies providing transport services via dedicated apps, from which users’ book rides. The advancement of technology in the past decade can be said to be all-encompassing.

From sports to entertainment, work to home: our everyday life has felt the impact. We have chosen to look at 5 of the most notable technological advancements in the past decade.

1. Social Media Took Away People’s Privacy

This past decade saw an increase in the popularity of various social media platforms. Facebook was indeed founded in 2004 and Twitter in 2006 but the emergence of Instagram in 2012 in the use of social media.

The app made sharing of private events more popular than before. While Twitter became a go-to place for most breaking news, people used Instagram to air events as they happen via Instagram live video. Thanks to social media, especially Instagram, footballers, actors, and individuals from different spheres of life shared their life events with their fans and audience, all over the world.

2. Higher Speed Internet with 4G and 5G

One of the biggest technological innovations in the last decade was the introduction of 4G and 5G. As the conduct of business between organizations and individuals in distant locations became popular, the need for a faster internet connection increased.

This led to the introduction of the 4G network in most parts of the world. It is true that 4G was introduced more than a decade ago but it was only in 2010 that the first 4G LTE smartphone was made available. It took some more years before it became popular and in use in most parts of the world.

In late 2018, 5G was introduced to further improve internet connection. Although it was met with some criticism, the improvement in internet speed cannot be understated.

3. Cloud Storage Dethrone Hard-Disk and Desktop Storage

Traditionally, organizations store their documents on external hard drives and desktops. However, the need to keep confidential documents safe and away from public view became a growing concern.

Hence, cloud storage provides a veritable means of keeping company files safe and gives access to few people. With the improvement in internet speed through the introduction of 4G and 5G, companies face little challenges in uploading files to the cloud. Thanks to cloud storage services, companies are now moving away from hard disk and desktop storage to cloud storage.

4. Football Referees Gets Assistance

In decades before the last, there have been discussions about the introduction of technology in the officiating of football matches. This discussion became necessary because of clear errors made by referees during football matches.

The call for the application of this technology reached its apex following the “ghost goal” by England’s Frank Lampard in a match against Germany at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The decision of the referee not to award a goal for a shot that clearly crossed the goal line drew widespread criticism.

Therefore, it came as no surprise when IFAB (International Football Association Board) agreed to the introduction of the Goal-line technology in 2012. This technology helps to determine if the ball has crossed the goal line. Referees now wear a watch-like device that notifies them that a ball has crossed the goal line. This helped to reduce the error of wrongly awarding a goal that did not cross the line and vice versa.

Years later, the VAR was introduced to Football. The VAR (Video Assistant Referee) was introduced to remove/reduce errors in the officiating of other aspects of football. Such as the wrong identity: a player wrongly issued a card for an offence he did not commit, wrongful dismissal, wrong penalty calls, amongst others. Although its application has not been as near-perfect as the goal-line technology, it has helped to reduce some of the aforementioned errors.

5. Increase in the use of mobile applications

The use of mobile applications in the world increased greatly in the last decade. Thanks to software engineers, mobile applications are now scattered all over the net, performing different functions.

With various available mobile applications, people now perform tasks hitherto thought impossible on the go. From following a fitness plan to placing orders for household equipment.

Companies like Uber saw an increase in the demand for their transport service via mobile apps. Most banks now have mobile applications as well as gaming companies.

Football fans are not left out too. In the past decade, some excellent football apps are now available at your fingertips. These apps make it easier to enjoy and follow football with ease.

All in all, all of these mobile applications have been a great improvement in technology in the last decade.

Conclusion

The use of technology will continue to be popular as tasks become more complex. Its use is meant to make these complex tasks simpler. The last decade saw a lot of technological innovations and the coming years have huge promise.

In the years ahead, the world will witness the evolution of 5G, Big Data Analytics, Cloud Computing, VAR, amongst others. It is left to be seen how successful or not it will turn out to be.
